GUIDE OF OLYMPIC GAMES - Volleyball |
Volleyball,
like Basketball has its origin in United States. Invented
by William.G.Morgan in 1895, the game was originally known
called "Mintonette". Volleybll quickly became
more popular in countries other than United States. The
sport was introduced to Olympics by Japanese in 1964 Tokyo
Olympic games. No country has been truly dominant in Volleyball.
The beach volleyball phenomenon has become a spectator
and Television success.
The introduction of the specialist role of the libero
has added a new dimension to the game. The libero cannot
serve, spike the ball over the net or rotate into the
front-line positions, but plays a pivotal position for
the team in serve reception and back court defence. The
l9bero cannot be in the court for the whole game but remain
a substitute. Matches are played best of five sets. The
first four sets are played to 25 points, with the final
being played to 15 points. A team must win a set by two
points. There is no ceiling, so a set continues until
one of the teams gains a two point advantage.
